Few adults can remember what happened to them before the age of 3. That’s certainly true in my case, so what can I remember? Snow yes snow, 1963 was one of the worst recorded winters. I can remember the snow being several feet thick, my dad clearing the driveway, my nan having snow blown under the roof tiles and into her loft. Oh, and it was the year my sister was born.
But 1963 was a momentous occasion for my family, it was the year when my dad, Gerry decided to go it alone and started the company of Gerald Cope & Co. Chartered surveyors and Estates agents. The office was based in Cranham which at the time was an expanding village and has since become an extension of Upminster. He was selling new homes as well as carrying out house and commercial surveys. Surveying took him all over Essex including Grays.
Up until the early 80’s most towns only had a few Estate agents and surveyors so naturally enough they all knew each other. In 1977 Les Johnson of Johnsons an established estate agents in Grays decided it was time to sell and offered it to Gerry. Together with a partner Cyril Ellis they took ownership and so was born Gerald Cope Ellis and Co.
It wasn’t until the early 80’s that I came into the business after always having an interest and wanting to be in property from an early age. The business has evolved and changed over time with the challenges of competition and the highs and lows in the market. We are still growing and evolving to meet today’s demands and I have behind me a great team. You may ask after 35 years in the business, why? Well my ”Why” is to put a smile on people’s faces, to help them move and fulfil their lifestyle dreams and to deliver more than they expect.
