It was the first day in over 250 years that Britain was 'coal free!'
The National Grid ran, for the first time ever, for a continuous 24 hour period, without using any coal.
It was the very first time this has happened since the use of fossil fuels began, right at the start of the Industrial Revolution.
And what I find fascinating about this is that, even a decade ago, it would have been unimaginable…. but that's progress!
So what of our local coal powered power station? When I first came to Grays the Tilbury power station was in full swing and a big local employer, in 2011 it was converted to Biomass but went offline in 2013. The Port of Tilbury bought th152-acrere site and has now demolished most of it. Plans and a consultation process are now in hand to turn the site, now known as “Tilbury 2” into a satellite port for a roll-on roll-off ferry terminal for importing and exporting containers and trailers.
